Our zazenkai seem to fulfill a need people have for more sustained silent sitting, so we’re offering one more this year, on Sunday, Nov.6. This one will have a special theme: The Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos), a beautiful Mexican tradition that falls on Nov.1st and 2nd. We’re calling this day of zazen Honoring the Ancestors, Deepening Our Practice.
In connection with this theme we’d like to set up a memorial table-altar for photos of people’s family members, friends and beloved pets who have died, as well as small offerings (e.g. flowers, favorite foods) that people may wish to include. People could bring in photos, etc. any time during the week before, and/or on the day itself.
The schedule will be as follows:
Day of Zazen - Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011 - Schedule
5:30 a.m..................................Wake up
6:00 - 8:00 ..............................Simple exercises in the zendo; zazen with chanting
8:00.........................................Formal breakfast; clean up
9:30.........................................Zazen (2 rounds with kinhin)
10:30……………...……..……...Kinhin; set up for teisho; Hakuin’s chant, teisho
11:30 (approx.)……….....………Kinhin
12:15........................................Informal lunch in silence, clean up, rest
1:15..........................................Resume zazen, with dokusan (SK only)
3:15..........................................Final chanting service
