Sunrise at Black Balsam

Tomorrow morning we’ll move our formal sitting outdoors, to take in the sunrise at Black Balsam, about an hour’s drive from the Center. With winter around the bend we want to, as Thoreau put it, 'suck the marrow' from these golden days of autumn. Word has it this is the best place around to catch the sunrise. Please join us if you can!
Here's a brief description and directions from hikewnc.info: The Black Balsam area includes one of the most spectacular mountain balds in the Southern Appalachians (...). The trailhead is along Black Balsam Road (FR 816), off of the Blue Ridge Parkway (...). The quickest way to the summit of 6214' Black Balsam Knob itself is via the Art Loeb trail at the gap (about 2/3 of a mile from the parkway - Black Balsam Road is the first right, near milepost 420, after the Graveyard Fields parking area) (...). This is a walk of about 1/2 mile which gains about 400' in elevation. It passes through open, grassy and rocky mountain meadows.

Call us if you’d like to carpool (we'll be leaving Windhorse a little before 6AM), and bring something to sit on. Zazen begins at 7:15 at the summit of the knob (or a nearby unoccupied bald area).
